What to Do In Luxembourg City in 36 hours
Taking the train from Brussels, my family of three arrived in Luxembourg City, the capital of one of the smallest countries in the world with the same name. Although a smaller city, it’s over 1,000 years old. Built along gorges formed by two rivers, walking through Luxembourg offers stunning views at every turn.
Here’s what we recommend after spending 36 hours in Luxembourg City.
Eat:
- Green curry with chicken at Ukulele Thai Bar & Food, a top-rated Thai restaurant decorated with colorful umbrellas on the ceiling and unique urinals in the men’s restroom.
- Kniddelen (traditional dumplings) from OekoSoph!, a local restaurant with outdoor seating, a salad bar, and friendly staff.
Drink:
- Hard cider from OekoSoph!.
Do:
- Climb the tower at Fort Thüngen, a 18th century fortress that’s now a museum with free admission.
- Get to know the city through Luxembourg City Tourist Office‘s scavenger hunt for kids. It’s free and there’s a small prize at the end.
- Stroll along the Alzette in Grund, a neighborhood in the southern part of town.
- Take your kids to the Pirate Ship Playground, a large playground with a pirate ship, large slides, tire swings, sand pits, and a water area within the Municipal Park of Luxembourg.
- Walk on a glass floor high above the ground at the Panoramic Elevator of the Pfaffenthal, a public elevator with a lookout with views of the city.
See:
- Modern art at Mudam Museum of Modern Art, which offers free admission every Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
- Roman art and a modern mural along Rue du St Esprit by the Luxembourg City History Museum, a small museum that gives an overview of Luxembourg’s 1,000+ year history.
- Yellow giant benches at Neumünster Abbey, an old abbey that now hosts events.
- View of the main fortress from along the Alzette. Views from the main fortress are beautiful along Mnt du Grund.
